TIME is running out for Scholes to save themselves from relegation in the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division.
Last Saturday’s derby defeat to local rivals Liversedge, coupled with Northowram Fields beating New Farnley, has left Scholes nine points adrift of safety with just four matches remaining.
With leaders Wrenthorpe and second-placed Birstall still to play, you would think that the New Popplewell Lane side would have to win their other two matches to stand a chance of producing a great escape.
Scholes travel to Jack Hampshire Trophy winners Wakefield Thornes tomorrow (1pm), while second-bottom New Farnley face a tough game against Methley and third-bottom Northowram host Ossett.
Liversedge will hope to bounce back from the disappointment of losing last Sunday’s Jack Hampshire final to Thornes, when they travel to Wrenthorpe.
If Liversedge were to produce a shock win, it would throw the title race wide open and give second-placed Birstall the chance to move top.
Scholes A are a point clear of Moorlands A at the top of Division Three with four games remaining and they entertain Buttershaw St Paul’s A tomorrow.
Liversedge A, third-bottom in Division Two, will be looking to go one better than their first team when they meet Barnsley in the Crowther Cup Final at Hanging Heaton on Bank Holiday Monday (noon).
Liversedge have appeared in three Crowther finals but are yet to win one, having lost to Kirkheaton in 1988, Ossett in 1992 and Barnsley in 2003.
The men from Roberttown Lane face a tough test if they are to make it fourth time lucky as Barnsley seconds are aiming to win the trophy for the third time in six years.
