THERE will be a new formation and at least one new face for Liversedge following the side's 'awful' exit from the FA Cup at Pickering Town last Sunday.
Former midfielder Chris Walton has returned to the club from Conference side Alfreton in the wake of the 4-1 loss in North Yorkshire. Liversedge, who are joint top of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division travel to Lincoln Moorlands Railway tomorrow and are at home to Selby on Monday, both 3pm kick-offs.
“We were terrible at Pickering, we went on a coach and we stayed on it. There were only two or three players who had a decent game,” fumed Liversedge manager Steve Newton.
“They (Pickering) missed a sitter in the first second and it should have been a wake-up call. It was an awful display. We had lots of chances in the second half but we just couldn’t convert them.
“The players I call my big players, those who have lots of experience at a higher level of football, just didn’t turn up.”
Newton is urging his players to put the FA Cup tie out of their minds and be positive, adding: “Now we have to get on with it and look to the league.”
Changes are likely for this weekend’s fixtures and midfielder Walton should feature.
Newton said: “Chris used to play for Liversedge. He has been playing at Alfreton but because of work commitments he can’t devote the time that it needs in the Conference and he has joined us.”
His experience will be useful at North East Counties level, especially as Liversedge have to combat the high spending of teams such as Hallam who are joint top with Liversedge. The teams are set to meet next Saturday at Clayborn.
Newton said he may change the system tomorrow to better suit the players he has available.
“We started with a 4-4-2 system in the first two games and we scored eight goals but we might have to look at changing the formation to get the best out of the players.”
